A Large Salivary Stone of the Submaxillary Gland



Abstract
The authors have recently experienced a case of very large salivary stone of the left submaxillary gland.
A 34-Year old man visited the department of otolaryngology Yonsei University, Severance hospital on 27 iuly 1971 with complaints of walnut sized hard mass on the left submaxillary region and mastication difficulty. He has been relatively well until 10 days prior to visit when he has experienced pus discharge and noticed above mass.
Physical examination revealed a previous surgical wound and opening, 0.8X0.9cm in size, on the anteroinferior portion of the anterior pilla of the left palatine tonsil and a hard, grayish white mass was there.
Plain A-P and both oblique mandibular viewed radiological examination, revealed a round radioopaque density on the left submaxillary region.
A stone was removed transoral approach under the general anesthesia, it vias grayish-white in color, 3 X 2 X 2 cm in size, 7 gm in weight, and the chemical composition of the stone was verified as mainly Ca-phosphate and Ca-phosphate and Ca-oxalate in ammoniacal matrix.
